The Man in the Iron Mask (1939) - As Second Officer
Plot Summary
- D'Artagnan and the musketeers are the only ones who know of the existence of a twin brother, and Fouquet uses his influence to keep everyone silenced. The main story was changed by portraying Louis XIV as selfish, cruel, and incompetent, and Philippe the kind-hearted brother who is raised by D'Artagnan and the musketeers and does not even know that he has an identical twin. When the truth is discovered, Louis XIV has Philippe imprisoned with the iron mask placed on him, hoping that Philippe's beard will grow inside the mask and eventually strangle him.

Laddie (1940) - As Robert Pryor
Plot Summary
- Set in rural Indiana, the story revolves around the romance between a local farm boy (John Beal) and English-born girl (Gloria Stuart). The lovers are separated during most of the proceedings by their warring families, headed respectively by the young man's remonstrative parents (Willard Robertson and Dorothy Peterson) and the girl's domineering father (Donald Crisp). Ironically, despite the parents' prattling about decency and propriety, it is a family scandal that ultimately provides a happy ending.

Vigil in the Night (1940) - As Joe Shand
Plot Summary
- Nurse Anne Lee blames herself for a fatal mistake of her sister Lucy, who also is a nurse. Anne looses her job, and gets a new one at a poorly equipped country hospital. There she falls in love with Dr. Prescott, who is battling with Mr Bowly, the chairman of the local hospital board, who also makes Anne's life miserable. But then a virulent epidemic begins.

A Chump at Oxford (1940) - As Student (Jones)
Plot Summary
- With Stan (Stan Laurel) dressed in drag, he and Ollie (Oliver Hardy) get jobs as a butler and maid for a dinner party at the Vandevere's. After that ends in disaster, they're reduced to sweeping streets, and accidentally capture a bank robber. The grateful bank president sends them to Oxford for a proper education. A knock on the head gets Stan to believing he's the famed Lord Paddington, scholar and athlete extraordinaire.

Women in War (1940) - As Capt. Evans
Plot Summary
- A "good-time girl", raised by her somewhat lax divorced father, finds herself involved in an accidental death, and the only way she's able to get out of it is to volunteer--albeit reluctantly--to be a nurse in the war effort. She travels to England and is assigned to a hospital under a very strict matron. What the girl doesn't know is that the matron is the mother she has never seen..

The Howards of Virginia (1940) - As Leslie Stephens
Plot Summary
- A historical epic about a Virginia couple from differing backgrounds during the Revolutionary War. Matt Howard (Cary Grant) is a common man who gains employment as a surveyor with the help of Thomas Jefferson. Howard quickly falls head over heels for his wealthy employer's daughter, Jane Peyton (Martha Scott). The lovebirds appear to be set for a happily-ever-after ending until Matt becomes involved in politics and the War of Independence arrives. Matt and his two sons side with the rebels while Jane sides with the British.

They Dare Not Love (1941) - As Sub-Lieutenant Blacker
Plot Summary
- In this drama, which blends romance with suspense, Prince Kurt von Rotenberg (George Brent) is attempting to flee his native Austria one step ahead of German troops. In his travels, he meets Marta Keller (Martha Scott), and amidst the chaos that surrounds them, the two fall in love, even though she is already engaged to another. Kurt and Marta set their sights on Czechoslovakia, but they lose track of each other along the way, and in time Kurt decides to make a profound sacrifice for the woman he loves -- when he learns that Marta's fiancé has been captured by Nazi troops, Kurt offers to turn himself in to German authorities in exchange for his release. They Dare Not Love proved to be the last feature film credited to British director James Whale, though he did not in fact complete the project; midway through the shooting, Whale was replaced by Charles Vidor. Lloyd Bridges and Peter Cushing both appear in minor roles.

Hamlet (1948) - As Osric, Servant to the Court
Plot Summary
- Claudius poisons the monarch and seizes the throne. Hamlet seeks revenge, in a play to torment Claudius. Thinking a concealed spy in his mother's chamber to be the lurking Claudius, he mistakenly kills the meddling counselor, Polonius, father of Ophelia and Laertes. Claudius, on the pretext that Hamlet will be endangered by his subjects for the murder of Polonius, sends the prince to England.

When We Are Married (1951) (TV) - As Gerald Forbes
Plot Summary
-
Television production of the comedy farce by J.B. Priestley, set in 1908 in the town of Clecklewyke in Yorkshire. Three married couples who were all married 25 years ago and celebrating their anniversaries find out that something irregular may have happened at the time throwing doubt on whether they are validly married. .

 

Pride and Prejudice (1952) (mini-series) - As Mr. Darcy in 6 episodes
Plot Summary
- A satirical tale of an ambitious provincial wife, a houseful of marriageable daughters, and a seemingly "helpless" heroine who allowed a pompous young gentleman to chase her until she caught him -- seemed to hold a particular fascination for TV producers. The first of several miniseries adaptations of the novel aired as a five-parter from February 2 to March 8, 1952.

 

Moulin Rouge (1952) - As Marcel de la Voisier
Plot Summary
- Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec frequently visits the Moulin Rouge, where he drinks cognac and draws sketches of the dancers and singers. Though the son of a French count, Henri's legs were badly deformed by a childhood fall, and his personal life is often unhappy as a result. While he is going home one night, a spirited young woman of the streets, Marie, asks him for help. He falls in love with her, and the two become involved in a tumultuous relationship. It becomes increasingly difficult for Toulouse-Lautrec to balance his personal feelings, his artistic abilities, and his family name and position.

Plot Summary
- As a blacksmith John (Alan Ladd) can't hope to win the hand of Linet (Patricia Medina), daughter of the Earl of Yeonil, so he secretly becomes the Black Knight to help out King Arthur when Saracens and Cornish men plot to take over the country by mounting raids dressed up as Vikings. However, his thoughts are not only on the protection of England when the good lady Linet becomes threatened.

BBC Sunday Night Theatre: 1984 (1954) (TV) - As Winston Smith
Plot Summary
- Holland, a shy retiring man, dreams of being rich and living the good life. Faithfully, for 20 years, he has worked as a bank transfer agent for the delivery of gold bullion. One day he befriends Pendlebury, a maker of souvenirs. Holland remarks that, with Pendlebury's smelting equipment, one could forge the gold into harmless-looking toy Eiffel Towers and smuggle the gold from England into France. Soon after, the two plant a story to gain the services of professional criminals Lackery and Shorty. Together, the four plot their crime, leading to unexpected twists and turns.

Plot Summary
- Alec Graham is sentenced to death for the murder of his girlfriend Jennie, with whom he spent a weekend at the English country home of the parents of his friend Brian Stanford. Alec's father, David Graham, a not-so-successful writer and alcoholic who has neglected his son in the past, flies in from Canada to visit his son on death row. Alec repudiates his father's attempts for a final reconciliation. David Graham, convinced of his son's innocence and, despite his preoccupation with himself and his own alcoholism, mounts a last-ditch effort to find the true murderer in the 24 hours remaining until the planned execution. Graham encounters the wealthy and famous car manufacturer Robert Stanford, tyrant at home and in the office and an apparent womanizer, Stanford's young, curiously troubled wife Honar, their ill-at- ease son Brian, himself disturbed by his parents' relationship, and Vicky Harker, a young, brainless secretary at Stanford's factory who has been climbing up the career ladder at a rapid pace lately

Plot Summary
- This is Hammer's first color film, and told in flashback. The story centers around Baron Victor Frankenstein, a dangerously arrogant scientist who takes it upon himself to play God. Using portions of dead bodies, Victor fashions a synthetic monster (Christopher Lee) with a bad attitude. In a radical departure from the Frankenstein canon, it is the imperious Victor who orchestrates the film's two murders by "borrowing" the brain of a learned professor, then leaving his next victim at the mercy of the monster.

The Abominable Snowman (1957) - As Doctor Dr. John Rollason
Plot Summary
- On an expedition in the Himalayas, a botanist encounters American Tom Friend at a monastery and joins a sortie led by Friend to find the Yeti, which Friend intends to bring back as a carnival exhibit. But the expedition’s numbers are reduced by Friend’s wrecklessness, accidents and the Yeti itself. Eventually only Friend and Rollason are left to confront the Yeti.
- Dr. John Rollason is the botanist currently in the Himalayas with his wife Helen and colleague Peter Fox collecting samples of medicinal plants. He had planned to go after the Yeti the whole time.

Plot Summary
- Struggle between a Liverpool Juvenile Liaison officer and a young and dangerous pyromaniac. The delinquent is finally taken away to face justice and the Officer is promised a happy future with his sister.

Plot Summary
- This first of a series of Hammer Horror films starts after Jonathan Harker attacks Dracula at his castle, the vampire travels to a nearby city, where he preys on the family of Harker's fiancee. The only one who may be able to protect them is Dr. van Helsing (Peter Cushing), Harker's friend and fellow-student of vampires, who is determined to destroy Dracula, whatever the cost.
- Van Helsing is a Dutch doctor with a wide range of interests and accomplishments but is best known as a vampire hunter.

The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) - As Dr. Baron Victor Frankenstein / Dr. Victor Stein
Plot Summary
- Baron Frankenstein is facing the guillotine for the murders he committed in the name of science., but manages to escape execution, and with the aid of the deformed hunchback named Karl. Three years later, now known as Dr. Stein, the Baron has a successful practice, but someone recognises him as the Baron Frankenstein. Doctor Kleve asks to Stein in his search for knowledge. Frankenstein accepts, and reveals that he has created the shell of a man into which he intends to put the brain of Karl. So, Frankenstein and Kleve transfer Karl's brain into the other lifeless body, but complications ensue.

Plot Summary
- Returning to his family's manor house on the lonely moors after his father dies under mysterious circumstances, Sir Henry Baskerville is confronted with the mystery of the supernatural hound that supposedly takes revenge upon the Baskerville family. The famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Dr. Watson are brought in to investigate.

Plot Summary
- The swashbuckling adventures of the hero of the Revolutionary War. His contributions weren't always appreciated by the new U.S. government. After the way Congress show their displeasure by sending him to the Russia of Catherine the Great.

 

The Mummy (1959) - As John Banning
Plot Summary
- Archeologist John Banning is so intent on unearthing the Egyptian tomb of Ananka that he refuses to have his broken leg properly set. He's therefore unable to assist when his father Stephen (Felix Aylmer) is unaccountably driven mad just as his dream of discovery comes true. Years later back in England, the now-crippled John again fails his asylum-restrained father when he discounts the old man's claims that a living mummy is loose in the world, much to John's later regret. Mehemet Bey, an Egyptian adept of the god Karnak, has the holy scroll of life and the living mummy Kharis (Christopher Lee) as well, and plans to use both to murder the English infidels.

Plot Summary
- A seasoned pilot is condemned for an error which causes a crash. The pilot later dies in a crash with similar circumstances and an examiner looks for scientific reasons for the crashes.

Plot Summary
- Marianne, a Parisian schoolteacher, on her way to a position in Transylvania meets a strange young man when she is forced to spend the night at the castle of Baroness Meinster. She helps the Baroness' son escape the shackles his mother has put on him. In so doing she innocently unleashes the horrors of the undead vampire once again on the populace, including those at the school for ladies.
- Dr. Van Helsing is the famous vampire hunter that usually dispatches Dracula and the other vampires. In this movie, the focus is on Van Helsing instead of Dracula.

Plot Summary
- A government team researching cures for plague find their results put on the Official Secrets list. One of their number is so incensed by this that he lets the maimed and jealous companion of a female colleague draw him into what, technically, could be a treasonable act.

 

Sword of Sherwood Forest (1960) - As the Sheriff of Nottingham
Plot Summary
- The sheriff of Nottingham plots to confiscate the estate of the Lord of Bortrey, who has died on Crusade. The Archbishop of Canterbury speaks against this plot, and the sheriff plans to eliminate him. Robin Hood pretends to undertake the assassination of the Archbishop for the plotters; Maid Marion, meeting him thinks him the leader of a gang of murderers, and leads him into a trap.

 

Cash on Demand (1961) - As Fordyce
Plot Summary
- A ruthless crook abducts the wife and child of a bank manager and then masquerades as an insurance company detective while scheming to rob the institution in this crime drama. Unfortunately, some of the manager's employees learn about the plot and the terrified manager must beg them to remain silent. Fortunately, the cops have been on the case all along.

Plot Summary
- Years after fleeing his ancestral home with his mother, Jason returns home to claim his birthright, only to find his way blocked by his evil cousin Thomas. In order to reclaim his title, Jason must do battle with his cousin, who calls upon the members of the deadly Hellfire Club to stop him.

Plot Summary
- Squire Trevenyan. The Squire is the sole judge and jury for the area and is periodically backed up by soldiers. His efforts succeed in nabbing a group of smugglers/wreckers, but only provokes more violence. Soon, his beloved son is the target of a kidnapping plot aimed at obtaining freedom for the captured criminals.

Plot Summary

Captain Clegg (1962) aka Night Creatures - As Reverend Doctor Blyss (Capt. Clegg)
Plot Summary
- Captian Collier (Patrick Allen) arrives in and English coastal town with his band of navy men to investigate reports of illegal smuggling and bootlegging, only to find that he must also investigate reports of "Marsh Phantoms," being said to ride on phantom horses through the marshes spreading terror to any who encounter them. The Captian suspects that the local vicar is hiding something as well.

Plot Summary
- This nine-part BBC mini-series presented Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra in order of real-life historical events, staged on what by early 1960s BBC standards was a huge budget.

 

Comedy Playhouse (1963) (TV Series) - As Albert Fawkes
Plot Summary
- Comedy Playhouse was a famous, long-running strand in which the BBC aired half-hour comedy sitcoms, many of which were pilot try-outs for projected series. (A remarkable 28 series were spawned in this way.) The first two batches of "Comedy Playhouse" were written solely by top comedy writing team Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, but subsequent series were penned by a variety of writers.

 

The Man Who Finally Died (1963) - As Dr. Peter von Brecht
Plot Summary
- In the Bavarian town of Konigsbergen, a horse-drawn hearse containing the coffin of Kurt Deutsch creaks across the town square while two men phone London to request the deceased’s long-lost son, jazz musician Joe Newman, come to Germany. Newman arrives a week later, but believes his father died 20 years ago in action during WWII. Joe is told that his father escaped from the communists and married a young woman, Lisa Deutsch. Newman begins to do some investigating and begins to believe that his father is not dead.
